Itinerary
-
Day 1: Keflavik – Borganes
Arrival at Keflavik Airport (own arrangement), from where a transfer bus will take you to your hotel in Borganes. On the way we´ll make a stop in Havalfjördur to visit the old whaling station and the war museum. At arrival in Borganes, if time allows, you are free to explore cozy cafes and old houses with history.
- Day 2: Snæfellsnes peninsula Today you will discover why this region was rated the most scenic destination in Europe by the luxury Travel Guide. Stunning Snæfellsnes is fast becoming one of the most visited places in Iceland, for good reason! This place is simply magical and spellbinding with moss-cloaked lava fields, picturesque mountains, stunning black sand beaches, roaring ocean waves, lava tube caves, charming little villages and sea cliffs. Kirkjufell Mountain is located on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, it’s known as Arrowhead Mountain in Game of Thrones – one of the landmarks beyond The Wal. We spend the night in Stykkishólmur.
-
Day 3: Breyðarfjörður
We will start the day with a boat trip on Breidarfjordur wich is a large shallow bay, famous for its stunning natural beauty with about 3.000 islands, islets and skerries. It has a perfect framing of high and low mountains, the most prominent of all is Snaefellsjokull. Breidafjordur is a paradise for bird watchers and sometimes you can see grey seals frolicking in the bay. Todays hotel is situated on the south coast of the Westfjörds and we will stay here for two nights.
-
Day 4: Visit Puffins at Latrarbjarg
This will be a long day, but truly a day to remember for a lifetime! The cliffs of all cliffs, Látrabjarg, are home to birds in unfathomable numbers. Látrabjarg is 14 kilometres long and up to 550 m high and the most visited tourist attraction in the Westfjords. The puffins are almost tame and therefore it is easy to take close-up photos. We will also stop at Rauðisandur, an amazing beach that like an instrument is being played by high and low tides as well as of lights and shadows. The sand is equally impressive on rainy days, constantly changing colors from red to yellow to white to red to black. We will drive past Patreksfjörður, a small seaside village and then head back to our hotel.
-
Day 5: Dynjandi, Bolungarvík and Isafjörður
Driving the roads in the Westfjords is both exciting and breathtaking at the same time. The deep and long fjords, majestic mountains and rich vegetation make a beautiful view while driving to the isolated fishing villages in the Westfjords. This region is known for its amazing landscape and there are numerous attractions in the area. Ísafjörður is the capital of the Westfjords and a perfect base for exceptional adventures in this remote part of the country. Today we´ll drive to Isafjörður with a stop at Dynjanda, one of the largest waterfalls in Westfjords. At Flatteyri, you can see a big avalanche protection wall on the mountain. We also make a stop at Bolungarvik and drive up on Bolafjall. This area offers a staggering view over Ísafjarðardjup, Jökulfirðir and some people say all the way to Greenland.
-
Day 6: Isafjarðardjúp – Borganes.
Today´s first stop is at Holmavik to visit the Museum for Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft. Between 15 May and 15 September, you can find a fabulous wool market in Króksfjardarnes. This is a lovely opportunity to engage with local knitters and experts in Icelandic wool. Visiting Grábrók volcano center, Hraunfossar and Barnafoss Waterfalls. Barnafoss translates to ‘the Children’s Falls’. Two children crossed the stone bridge arching over the waterfall, but found the heights and surging water below dizzying. In a tragic turn of events, neither of them made it across the bridge, and both fell to their deaths. We continue to Reykholt wich used to be the intellectual center of the island and for many years, had one of the most important schools of the country. We will then go back to Borganes and stop for the night.
-
Day 7: Borganes–Reykjavík
Reykjavík might very well be the smallest city in the world but there are just so many things to see and do. For example whale watching, whale museum, city tours, street art, wild night life, Blue lagoon, Sky lagoon, fresh food in nice restaurants. The famous Hallgrímskirkja and the Perlan (museum of Icelandic history). The choice is yours. Our last night on the tour will be spent in Reykjavík.
