GOTLAND

The landscape of Gotland is fantastic. Perhaps it’s the variety that makes it so exciting. From wild and windswept in the north to flowering meadows and open landscapes in the south, framed by the sea and the 80 mile long coastline. Welcome to discover an island full of contrasts!

Itinerary

  • Day 1: Visby The journey goes towards our departure port Nynäshamn/ Oskarshamn where our ferry to Gotland is waiting. Upon arrival at the wonderful island, we suggest a city walk inside Visby’s well-preserved 13th century ring wall. Few cities have such a unique combination of old and new as Visby and you get to see what the former Hanseatic city offers in terms of cultural heritage, beautiful monastery ruins and pedestrian-friendly cobblestone alleys. We then check in at our hotel and gather for dinner.
  • Day 2: Fårö Today we make an excursion to the northern parts of the island. We pass Slite where we stop at the limestone quarry and then continue to the ferry terminal in Fårösund. The journey across the strait to Fårö takes less than ten minutes, and then we begin our tour of this remarkable island where the language and customs are very different from other parts of Gotland. Fårö has retained an ancient cultural landscape, the changes over the centuries are insignificant. The coast’s vast rauk fields and shingle beaches give the impression of primeval times in their magnificence. The road runs through sparse and windswept pine forest. At Fårö Church the landscape opens up to the wide bay in the east. During our journey here, we see pastures, stony fields, scattered settlements and fishing villages that testify to the necessary addition of fishing. The barren alvar land is still grazed and sheep seem to be part of the nature here. Back in Visby we have dinner together at the hotel and then the evening is free for your own activities
  • Day 3: Hoburgsgubben Along the Eksta Coast, overlooking the Karls Islands, we head towards the south of Gotland, known as Sudret, an old agricultural area with fertile soil. We reach the southern tip of the island where we find Hoburgen – a 750 meter long and 150 meter wide strip of beach, filled with rauks and weathered limestone cliffs. Like a figurehead, Gotland’s most famous rauk, Hoburgsgubben, sits here watching over his caves Sängkammaren and Skattkammaren. We visit Öja Church, one of the most beautiful churches on the island. The high tower Gra gasi is known as a sea mark. The church holds the island’s most famous medieval artwork, the incomparable crucifix from the 13th century. On the way back we recommend a visit to the Lummelunda cave with its exciting and magical cave halls. In the afternoon we return to the hotel and have some time on our own before heading to the Frimis restaurant in the Masonic garden. With the monastery ruins of St. Nicolai in the background, we are offered whole grilled lamb with accessories.
  • Day 4: Departure Today it is time to say goodbye to Gotland for now. Once again we have a nice boat trip ahead of us. When the boat docks, we head for home and an unforgettable trip to Sweden’s largest island is over.
